vinylTenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon(1923-89) made relatively few sessions during the 1950s due to drug problems but managed to record this quartet album for BETHLEHEM in Hollywood on September 18, 1955.With Gordon(tenor sax) were Kenny Drew(piano); Leroy Vinnegar(bass) & Lawrence Marable(drums) on four standards and two originals by the saxophonist.Gordon is in fine form and highlights are 'Confirmation' by Charlie Parker, who had died six months earlier, the standard 'You Can Depend On Me' and Dexter's title track. All in all, the enjoyable modern jazz on 'Daddy Plays The Horn' is a valuable example of Dexter Gordon's sparse recordings of the 1950s.
