vinylThe young Texan Booker Ervin taught himself to play tenor. His hard-driving tenor is heard on all Mingus's key albums of the late fifties and early sixties including 'Ah Um', 'Blues and Roots', 'At Antibes' and 'Mingus Five'. Booker Ervin belongs in the tenor sax hall of fame. Like John Coltrane, he had a tragically foreshortened career. Ervin performs five originals and 'Poor Butterfly', best are the slow blues 'The Blue Book' and the rapid blues 'The Book Cooks'. Booker Ervin's debut as a leader teamed the intense tenor saxophonist with fellow tenor Zoot Sims, trumpeter Tommy Turrentine, pianist Tommy Flanagan, bassist George Tucker and drummer Dannie Richmond.
