vinylKing Curtis(1934-1971) aka Curtis Ousley is best known as an R & B tenor saxophonist but he also made a couple of excellent jazz sessions for NEW JAZZ & PRESTIGE in 1960.Tracks 1-5('The New Scene of King Curtis') were recorded in New Jersey on April 21, 1960 with Curtis(tenor saxophone); Nat Adderley(cornet); Wynton Kelly(piano); Paul Chambers(bass) & Oliver Jackson(drums).Tracks 6-11('Soul Meeting') were recorded in New Jersey on September 18, 1960 with the above personnel but bassist Sam Jones & drummer Belton Evans replacing Chambers & Jackson.the eleven tracks include seven Curtis originals and four standards with the highlights being 'Willow Weep For Me', the Duke Ellington/Johnny Hodges 'Jeep's Blues' and Curtis's 'Do You Have Soul Now?'.Anyone dubious about the jazz credentials of King Curtis should be pleasantly surprised by the 79 minutes of exhilarating music on 'Soul Meeting'.
